Owner Occupancy – Deadline Approaching

There are only a few days remaining in which to file for owner occupancy on your home for 2018 (taxes paid in 2019).  Owner occupancy is a tax break that applies to your primary dwelling (you must both own and live in the home to qualify). To qualify for owner occupancy you must have been living in the home as of November 1st, 2017.

How do I know if I have Owner Occupancy or not?

On the assessment notice that you just received in the mail you should see the words “OWNER OCCUPIED” just below the land and residence values as show in the picture below.

If you do not see these words you have until March 15th to file an Owner occupied form with the Director of Equalization’s Office, 605-745-5136, .   Here is a link to the form which you may print and return. Forms are also available at the DOE office at 1029 N River St, open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.
