IMPORTANT SOUTH DAKOTA SECRETARY OF STATE PRESS RELEASE – MARCH 18, 2020 

 

Voter Registration Deadline is May 18, 2020 for the Primary Election and October 19, 2020 for the General Election.

Early (Absentee) Voting for the Primary Election begins April 17, 2020. Early (Absentee) voting for the General Election begins September 18, 2020. Early (Absentee) voting is available at the Fall River County Courthouse, 1st Floor Auditor’s Office, Monday – Friday, 8am to 5pm (except for holidays).

NOTICE OF DEADLINE FOR FILING NOMINATING PETITIONS FOR THE PRIMARY ELECTION AND FOR FILING INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE PETITIONS

          The deadline for filing nominating petitions for the primary election is March 31, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. mountain time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by March 31, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. mountain time, it is considered filed.

          The deadline for filing nominating petitions to run as an independent candidate in the general election is April 28, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. mountain time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by April 28, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. mountain time, it is considered filed. For the offices of County Commissioners at Large, County State’s Attorney, County Coroner, County Treasurer. Nominating petitions must be filed in the office of the Fall River county auditor, and nominating petitions for the offices of U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Public Utilities Commissioner, State Senate, State Representative, must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501.

          The deadline for filing nominating petitions to run as an independent candidate for president in the general election is August 4, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. central time. If a petition is mailed by registered mail by August 4, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. central time, it is considered filed.

          Nominating petitions for the offices of County Commissioners at Large, County State’s Attorney, County Coroner, County Treasurer, Statement to be filed by persons wishing to fill the position of Precinct Committeeman and Committeewoman for the Democratic and Republican parties must be filed in the office of the county auditor during regular business hours. Nominating petitions for the offices of President, U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Public Utilities Commissioner, State Senate, State Representative, must be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State, State Capitol Building, Pierre, SD 57501, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. central time.

Voters may obtain voting information through the Secretary of State’s website by accessing the Voter Information Portal. There, you may view your voter registration, polling place and sample ballots. If you are voting by absentee ballot, you may also track the date your absentee ballot request was received, the date your ballot was mailed and the date your completed ballot was received by the Auditor’s Office.
