Disabled Person Parking Permits and Plates

The Treasurer’s Office processes disabled person parking permits and plates. The permits and plates are for South Dakota residents- you must have a valid South Dakota driver’s license or ID, or be able to supply proof of residency, to obtain placards or plates.

To apply the South Dakota Disabled Person Parking Permit and License Plate Application will need to be completed. The application may be presented and signed for by a related third party on behalf of the applicant. To qualify for disabled parking permits and plates, an individual must have a physical disability that limits or impairs their ability to walk. Please note blindness or impaired vision by itself is not a valid criterion to receive disabled parking privileges. A licensed physician must certify on the application that the person meets one or more criteria listed in section F of the application.

Permanent parking permits

An individual can request up to two parking permits. The doctor’s certification on the application will need to indicate the disability is permanent. Permits are issued for five years and then they will need to be renewed. To renew a permanent permit the application will need to be filled out and in section C indicate you are renewing a permit and list your current permit number(s) and expiration date.

*A doctor’s certification is NOT required to renew a permanent permit. Section F may be left blank.

Temporary parking permits

An individual can request one temporary parking permit. The doctor’s certification on the application will indicate the disability is temporary and include the expected date of recovery. A temporary permit may be issued for a maximum of one year and cannot be renewed. A new application with a doctor’s certification must be submitted if the permit is still needed.

Disabled Person plates

The doctor’s certification on the application will need to indicate the disability is permanent. On the application in section D you will need to fill out the information for the vehicles the plates will be going on. If the vehicle is currently registered in your name you will need to surrender the current plates when applying for disabled person plates.

There is a $7.50 postage and handling fee for the disabled person plates. At the time of applying a temporary permit will be provided. The plates and registration will be mailed to you by the state once approved.

What do I do if my disabled parking permit has been lost or damaged?

The application will need to be filled out and signed for by the applicant. No doctor’s certification is required for a replacement permit. If you have two permits you will need to indicate which one is lost (or which one you still have) so the correct one is replaced. There is no charge to replace a permit.

 

Can someone else bring in the application for me to get the parking permits?

Yes, the application may be presented and signed by a related party on behalf of the applicant. They will need to provide the applicants South Dakota driver’s license or SSN (should be filled out on the application) and they can sign the application in section E as ‘For Applicant By’.

 

How do I fill out the Disabled Person Parking Permit and License Plate Application?

Section B enter the applicant’s information including current address and South Dakota driver’s license or ID or SSN

Section C if applying for or renewing a parking permit check the applicable item

Section D only fill out if applying for a disabled person plate (current plates on vehicle must be surrendered)

Section E if the applicant is signing, they will print their name as ‘Medically Certified Applicant’ and then sign and date. If a related party is signing on behalf of the applicant, they will print their name as ‘For Applicant By’ and then sign and date.

Section F must be filled out by the applicant’s doctor.

If any information is missing the application is not complete and the permits or plates will not be able to be issued until completed.

 

I don’t have a South Dakota driver’s license or ID; can I get a parking permit?

You must be a resident of South Dakota to qualify for a disabled person parking permit or plate. If you have an out of state driver’s license or ID, you will need to submit proof of residency. This may be a utility bill, internet\cable bill, rental\lease agreement, property\rental insurance statement, or paystub or earning statement.
